Eco Open Houses Launch 13th June

Thursday 13th June launches Brighton and Hove Eco Open Houses event, 2013. The largest event to date, this year’s network will showcase a myriad of different and inspiring properties. Councillor Pete West, Brighton and Hove Green party and chair of the Environment & Sustainability Committee, will celebrate the occasion by cutting a ribbon at 14 Newport Street, at 11.30. The event will then open to the public on the 15-16 and 22-23 June, as over 20 homes throw open their doors.

In visiting an Eco Open House you can learn and be inspired by the experiences of Eco Open Householders and see how significant savings can be made from fairly modest investments.

Newport Street is one of six Green Deal Pioneer type homes, and shows how to better insulate a buildings fabric by tackling the much trickier areas of insulation such as the floor or above the ceiling above a bay window. The householder, David Haines, the host of the launch, said, “I am really looking forward to seeing how much warmer and more comfortable my home will be next winter and love having my hot water now heated by the sun.” As home number 13 on the Eco Houses tour, it is well worth a look and to learn more about how the Green Deal could help you save energy.

Mischa Hewitt, Director of the Low Carbon Trust and joint co-ordinator, has been delighted the scope of different homes showcasing this year and enthusiasm shown by householders to share their experiences. “We have a great mix of homes open this year and the work we have done at the six Green Deal type homes in particular, will be highly relevant to many people. These homes show how a simple package of measures really transforms old leaky houses into comfortable, modernized dwellings, with much cheaper energy bills,” said Mischa.

You simply need to check online if you need to book for a tour or if you can just turn up at the home you wish to tour. On arrival you can learn about better insulation to biomass, green roof techniques, grey water recycling, the use of natural and recycled materials to the use of passive solar design.
