TOP TIPS FOR A MUSICAL HALLOWEEN FOR PRESCHOOLERS

TOP TIPS FOR A MUSICAL HALLOWEEN FOR PRESCHOOLERS
Which doesn’t scare the living daylights out of them!

By Caroline Crabbe, Jo Jingles (www.jojingles.com)

It’s that time of year again, blood-curdling terror, potions and spells and jaw-dropping costumes which are enough to spook even the bravest of little soldiers…

But amidst the excitement of pumpkin-carving and bobbing apples, it is easy to overlook the fact that for some children, Halloween can be a little scary.  This is certainly the case for the toddler/preschool community – who are old enough to understand fear but too young to distinguish between fiction and reality.  But when you have older siblings who may be only too happy to indulge in trick or treating, it’s worth popping a few ideas in your back pocket to ensure your toddler has fun in a not-so-frightening way.  Better still, if the party is designed for older children keep the little ones distracted or out of the picture altogether.

But if you want to celebrate Halloween with your toddler, music is particularly important in helping young children to express moods and feelings so it can play a huge part in your Halloween party.
  • Avoid the musical ‘fear factor’ – When playing games like musical statues: play music which is light-hearted and fun.  Try sticking with tradition like ‘Little Miss Muffett’ or ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ – spiders and dragons give the element of Halloween but without the fear factor.
  • Monstrous music: have a go at making your own Halloween musical instruments and then play them along to a song.  A crisp tube and a handful of rice make a great shaker and saucepan lids make great cymbals.  Whatever you do, decorate the outside with stickers of stars and moons, cats and bats (light-hearted and fun images).
  • Actions speak louder than words: Singing songs that include actions will help with your child’s coordination and balance as well and their sense of self-confidence.  Try songs like ‘Dingle, Dangle Scarecrow’ it has actions and the scarecrow element gives you a softer Halloween theme.  You could even get creative and change the words of some traditional nursery rhymes to use a familiar tune that younger children can relate to but with a Halloween theme!
  • Put on a show: Another nice idea is to make scary/fun finger puppets out of felt and pieces of wool or string and anything else you can find.  Then you could stage a finger puppet dancing contest where each child wears their puppet while dancing to the music.
  • Getting everyone moving: Some ideas for interactive fun are to play a traditional song and see how many Halloween actions you can do: such as ‘Boo hands’ get the children stretch their hands as far as they can saying "boo!!" or ‘spiders-tapping fingers’ and make them do this on a table/floor or ‘Ghost flying’ have each child hold their arms out and ‘fly’ like a ghost.
  • A nice end: You could always create a ‘last game’ of the day by getting all of the children to ‘shake the spooky out of themselves’ – dance to a song shaking your arms and legs so you have got rid of all of the Halloween spooks!

What a Hullabazoo!

This Saturday, 25th May there is a great new adventure play area opening at Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire.  I was lucky enough to go and take a sneek peek last Saturday and it was very much worth it! I’ve got two young boys aged 2 and 5 who absolutely loved it!

This is the recent press release from Whipsnade which explains just what it’s all about:

“Little ones will soon be climbing new heights at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo with the launch of Hullabazoo Adventure Play - a brand new, outdoor play area.

Opening on Saturday 25 May, just in time for the half term holidays, Hullabazoo Adventure Play has been specially designed around animal movement, giving youngsters the chance to slither and slide as they run wild and test their agility against one another.

Taking pride of place in the play area will be Whipsnade Heights, made up of six giant towers for children to tackle before they climb cargo nets, clamber over rope bridges and slide down fireman's poles.

Other fantastic features in the Zoo's bespoke play area include a zip wire, monkey bars, balance beams, seesaws and climbing frames. And Whipsnade's youngest visitors haven't been forgotten about either, as they'll have their own dedicated play space with swings, slides, and a roundabout.

Marketing Manager at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Laura Duffy said: "Whipsnade's brand new play area will be a big adventure for little ones. We hope they'll be inspired by watching our animals at play before exploring the new play equipment as part of a fantastic family day out."

Hullabazoo Adventure Play, located at the heart of the Zoo next to Hullabazoo Indoor Play and the farm, is suitable for children of all ages, and will be open 364 days of the year.”

As for Whipsnade itself, it’s a great family day out! We took our car into the zoo and drove around which the boys thought was amazing! They loved seeing the animals and being able to stop to take a closer look. Along with the Hullabazoo Adventure Play there is also the indoor play area which was another huge hit with my monkeys! Entry to both of the play areas is included in the zoo entry prices and with loads of special events coming up it, it’s well worth a visit!

Zoo Licence for Hobbledown

Surrey’s newest tourist attraction Hobbledown has received its Zoo Licence.

The licence is mandatory for any establishment which exhibits wild animals to the public.

The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 sets out how zoos in Great Britain are inspected and licensed. This ensures that zoos are safe for the public to visit, that high standards of welfare are maintained and that zoos make a contribution to conservation of wildlife.

More than 100 animals currently reside at Hobbledown, ranging from wallabies and birds of prey to miniature sheep, meerkats [which have just had a new family] and Patagonian Mara.

Over the next few weeks they will joined by a variety of new species including otters, racoon dogs, great grey owls and an Amazonian parrot.

The animals are overseen by an expert team of handlers on site lead by Dolores Nicholson. In addition Matt Hartley has been employed as a zoo and wildlife consultant.
Matt has worked in zoos and with wildlife for 20 years throughout the world and is a Government appointed Zoo Inspector.
His job at Hobbledown is to ensure the farm is kept to the highest possible standard.

A spokesperson at DEFRA [Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs] said: “Well-managed zoos can play an important role in educating visitors about wild animals and their habitats, and through activities which help conserve and protect threatened wildlife.”

  • Hobbledown is a unique farm park adventure which opened this summer. It cost more than £3million to build and has created more than 65 jobs.
  • As well as the animals it houses a variety of adventure play equipment including towers, tunnels, a low ropes adventure, aerial walkways, mazes, an interactive sand play zone and an aerial adventure course. There is also a 14,000sqft play barn.

Hobbledown at Horton Park Children’s Farm can be found in Horton Lane, Epsom, Surrey, KT19 8PT. For more information visit www.hobbledown.com or telephone 0843 289 4979.
