Royal Russell School rallies behind teacher’s charity plea

Staff and pupils at Royal Russell School in Coombe Lane, South Croydon, are rallying to raise money and awareness for the Motor Neurone Disease Association following a request by PE teacher Sarah Culliford whose brother, Andrew, is suffering from this terminal illness.

Sarah, 25, wanted to do something positive to help Andrew and the MND Association  charity which is supporting him through his illness.  She asked the School if it could help stage a fund-raising event and suggested pupils and staff sponsored a school team to walk all or some of the 66 mile Vanguard Way which runs from Croydon to Newhaven.  Sarah gave an assembly to the 600 Royal Russell senior school pupils in which she asked them to consider what they could do to show their support.

“The response was phenomenal with 250 staff and pupils dedicating the weekend of June 14-16 to a fundraising effort which we have called the Vanguard Challenge,” says Sarah.  “The scale of this is beyond my expectations and I’m humbled by the School’s support of Andrew, our family and the charity.”

Over one third of the pupils have since signed up to complete a physical feat of endurance. “We gave the pupils the idea of the ’66 miles from sea to school’ and explained that the Vanguard Way is a challenging  route to follow on foot or by bike,” says Deputy Headmaster David Selby.  “I was astounded, not only by the sheer numbers pledging to walk, run and cycle some or all of the distance, but by the individual ideas in which the challenge could be developed.  We even have a group horse riding!”

Other interpretations of the ‘66’ include such diverse events as a 6.6 hour Zumbathon, a 66 mile ski trip and kayak route.  More unusually, an afternoon of abseiling down the School Chapel tower has been organised and Portia Bean, 17,  is baking and selling themed cupcakes.  Even the very young children aged four to 10 in the Junior School are taking part, with many walking three miles alongside their parents and teachers.

The majority of the senior school pupils are tackling a six or 12 mile walk or run on the Sunday but a few are literally going the extra miles.  Jack Stone, 14, will complete a 66 mile swim in the School pool on the final day of the Challenge and two members of staff and two parents are aiming to run the whole 66 miles on the Sunday.  Forty pupils and staff are walking the full distance, covering 22 miles each day and camping en route.

All the money raised will go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association to help fund its research and care for sufferers like Andrew.  Motor Neurone Disease is not widely understood.  Sufferers have a life expectancy from one to five years from diagnosis and their symptoms develop in different ways.  What is common to all is the slow paralysis of the body as their motor neurone pathways become affected.  Often it starts in their fingers or toes and gradually progresses to their limbs.  When the disease reaches their mouth/throat, sufferers find it hard to swallow or speak.  Eventually, the lungs are affected and the sufferer passes away.

“Motor Neurone Disease is a truly debilitating illness for which there is currently no cure,” says Helena Maliniak, MND Association regional fundraiser for London.  “We are working tirelessly to  raise awareness, encourage more drug trials and educate people so they can understand the plight of those affected,” she says.  “We are totally reliant on fundraising.  The Royal Russell School Vanguard Challenge is on a scale not often seen by the MND Association: we are truly grateful for the School’s support of Andrew and Sarah.”

FRONTLINE RACING AT SANDOWN PARK

The Gunners come to Sandown Park Racecourse for a top day of racing at the Royal Artillery Gold Cup Day on Friday 15th February 2013.  The day’s proceedings will start early at 10.30am when a special parade in support of the Royal Artillery charities, will take place in Esher High Street and the racecourse is pleased to welcome the return of the Military Wives Choir.

The parade steps off at the top end of Esher High Street and will march down the main high street straight to Sandown Park Racecourse.   This year the parade will consist of marching troops from 1st Artillery Brigade including troops from 22 Battery, 32 Regiment Royal Artillery.   The men and women of 1st Artillery Brigade are  permanently on operations in Afghanistan.

The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery will also be on parade, as will the Royal Artillery Band, and cadets from the local Surrey Army Cadet Force.  A Rapier, a surface to air missile system which is permanently based on and used to defend the Falkland Islands, will also be part of the parade.

This year sees the return of the much loved singing sensation the Military Wives Choir who will be performing live during racing and singing a selection of their songs.   The choir, which is formed of the wives and girlfriends of British servicemen fighting in Afghanistan, was brought together by choirmaster Gareth Malone for the BBC2 series The Choir.

At 12.30pm, a 13lb World War One gun will be fired to announce the start of the racing and The Royal Artillery Hunt will be on parade in between the racing - racegoers can head down to the course to mingle with the hounds and hear the calling of the Huntsman Horn.  The Royal Artillery Band will play around the racecourse enclosures from 11.30 until 1.00pm

The feature race – the Royal Artillery Gold Cup - is one of Sandown Park’s oldest races having been first run in 1863 and then moved to Sandown Park for the first time in 1878.  It has been run at the racecourse every season since 1921.  The race is restricted to horses that are owned or have been leased by those who are serving or have served in the Royal Artillery or one of its recognised Establishments or Units.  The jockeys must be amateurs and either part or existing members of any of the Armed Forces, making the race unique in every sense.

With a great supporting card of competitive jump racing, there really is something for everyone and accompanied children aged under 18 go free.  For further information or to book in advance general admission, please visit www.sandown.co.uk or call 01372 47 00 47.

Zoo Licence for Hobbledown

Surrey’s newest tourist attraction Hobbledown has received its Zoo Licence.

The licence is mandatory for any establishment which exhibits wild animals to the public.

The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 sets out how zoos in Great Britain are inspected and licensed. This ensures that zoos are safe for the public to visit, that high standards of welfare are maintained and that zoos make a contribution to conservation of wildlife.

More than 100 animals currently reside at Hobbledown, ranging from wallabies and birds of prey to miniature sheep, meerkats [which have just had a new family] and Patagonian Mara.

Over the next few weeks they will joined by a variety of new species including otters, racoon dogs, great grey owls and an Amazonian parrot.

The animals are overseen by an expert team of handlers on site lead by Dolores Nicholson. In addition Matt Hartley has been employed as a zoo and wildlife consultant.
Matt has worked in zoos and with wildlife for 20 years throughout the world and is a Government appointed Zoo Inspector.
His job at Hobbledown is to ensure the farm is kept to the highest possible standard.

A spokesperson at DEFRA [Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs] said: “Well-managed zoos can play an important role in educating visitors about wild animals and their habitats, and through activities which help conserve and protect threatened wildlife.”

  • Hobbledown is a unique farm park adventure which opened this summer. It cost more than £3million to build and has created more than 65 jobs.
  • As well as the animals it houses a variety of adventure play equipment including towers, tunnels, a low ropes adventure, aerial walkways, mazes, an interactive sand play zone and an aerial adventure course. There is also a 14,000sqft play barn.

Hobbledown at Horton Park Children’s Farm can be found in Horton Lane, Epsom, Surrey, KT19 8PT. For more information visit www.hobbledown.com or telephone 0843 289 4979.
