A powerful new documentary film about childbirth made by Brighton
filmmakers is poised to send shock-waves around the world.
The 60 minute film called FREEDOM FOR BIRTH features a
Who's Who of international experts- all calling for a radical shake-up to the
world's maternity systems.
The film shows how women's rights in birth are routinely being abused
so that women cannot choose how and where they give birth.
Giving birth at home is not a fully supported option in many places.
In some US states and European countries like Hungary, midwives are actually
being imprisoned for supporting home birth.
Even in “liberal” countries like the Netherlands, pregnant women
expecting twins are forced to have c-sections even if the mother wants to have
a normal birth.
The filmmakers are Toni Harman and Alex Wakeford, Brighton parents to
a 4 year old daughter. As Toni says, “we are hoping this film raises awareness
of Human Rights in childbirth as an important global issue. We want this film
to inspire women to stand up and say “No more!”. That's why we are calling this
the Mothers' Revolution!”
The film launches with hundreds of premiere screenings happening all
over the world on the same day, Thursday 20th September. The global launch includes three screenings
in Sussex.
