Returning to work after children – How to get it right for your child, you and your career…

Sarah-Jane Butler, co-founder of Parental Choice, one of the UKs leading information resource websites for busy parents, is delighted to announce her participation in a live web Q&A hosted by The Guardian on Thursday 11 July at 1 and 3pm.

The Q&A will address the issues faced by women who want to return to work after having their children and offer advice on the ways in which the workplace and childcare can be managed to create a workable, effective and sustainable solution.

Sarah-Jane will be offering solid advice to mothers looking to return to work about their rights in the workplace, the resources they can tap into to assist with childcare and the options they have to available to help create a manageable work/life balance while ensuring that the ‘mummy’ role remains prioritised.

ABOUT PARENTAL CHOICE AND SARAH-JANE BUTLER

After the birth of her first daughter, Sarah-Jane spent hours researching childcare options and her legal rights as regards flexible working when she would rather have been spending time with her little girl. After finally finding a nanny and writing her own employment contract for her, it dawned on her that it really should not be that difficult for parents to find the information that they need to make the right choices for them in terms of childcare and their working lives and hence how the idea for Parental Choice was born.

Parental Choice is a “one-stop shop” for all of your queries regarding legal rights whilst pregnant, guidance when looking to return to work and all of the childcare options, including nurseries and dealing with the administration involved in employing a nanny. Parental Choice helps parents to make informed practical choices that work for both them and their children. By having everything in one place, Sarah-Jane hopes to save parents the endless trawling through the internet that she experienced, leaving parents more time to spend with their children.

Rookwood School make Olympic memories at ISA Festival of Sport!

Pupils from Rookwood School had the chance to make their own Olympic memories this week when they took part in The Independent Schools Association’s Festival of Sport- a ‘mini-Olympics’ for the independent sector attracting 32 schools from all corners of the country.

The event, which opened with a spectacular parade at the University of Nottingham Sports Centre, attracted over 800 pupils and covered an array of sporting events including athletics, swimming, hockey and basketball.

The twenty Rookwood pupils (aged between 14 and fifteen) performed “above and beyond the school’s expectations”, commented Rookwood’s Head of PE, Miss Liz Brown.
The Under 15 squad competed in the netball and football competitions as well as the swimming gala and the athletics, with the boys’ football squad gaining the U15 bronze.  This was swiftly followed by a resounding success in the swimming gala; an individual bronze for Will Turner in the 50m backstroke was followed by an outstanding display from the Rookwood girls (silver medals in both the girls’ medley relay and the squadron relay followed by a bronze in the girls’ freestyle relay).

Day two of the Festival brought further triumph with individual golds for Faye Baker (100m & Long Jump), Aaron Criston-Greet (Long jump) and Joshua Chatee (200m). Another silver medal was then awarded to Ella Neil for the 300m with the U15 girls relay team picking up final silver before the day was done!

Miss Brown concluded that the Festival was “an inspiring event that allowed Rookwood pupils to be part of a very unique experience – something that will stay them for the rest of their lives”.

Gwilym Price, ISA’s Director of Sport, said:
“2012 is an incredible year for British sport and what better way to mark it than by giving all of these children the chance to take part in their own Olympics”.
“The Festival of Sport is the largest sporting event we have ever undertaken and has been the perfect way to celebrate the lead up to the 2012 Games. As ever, we have seen some outstanding performances in all events and have been struck by the levels of sportsmanship and commitment shown by our pupils.”

“We know that each of the 800 young people who took part will take away their own Olympic memories which will stay with them for a very long time.”

Roger Brierly, Chair of ISA’s Sports Committee, commented:
“When London was selected to host the Olympic Games we started to plan for an event which would give hundreds of pupils from up and down the country their own Olympic memories. The Festival of Sport has done just that – and has been a unique celebration of enjoyable sport and Olympic values.”

Brighton parents! Free swimming extended to 12-16 year olds!

Free swimming is being made available to all 12-16 year olds in Brighton & Hove.

The initiative from Brighton & Hove City Council and NHS Brighton & Hove is set to start from this coming Saturday - June 23 2012.

The scheme will allow thousands of local children the chance to swim and keep fit every Saturday and Sunday after 2.00pm during public swimming times.

Councillor in charge of leisure Geoffrey Bowden said: “This all fits in with our keen wish to see more participation in sport and a healthy city.

“Kids love splashing about in water so it’s a great way to get them exercising.  With obesity rates among children soaring, that has to be a good thing.”

Free Swimming for 11s and under has been funded by the council and local NHS since September 2010 when the government stopped funding it. In the last financial year over 39,000 visits were made by local children to council swimming pools through the scheme.

Children can swim for free at the King Alfred Leisure Centre, Prince Regent Swimming Complex and St Luke’s Swimming Pool, all of which are operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of the Council.

Any child 16 and under can register on the scheme by picking up an application form at their local swimming pool or by visiting www.brighton-hove.gov.uk  Once the form has been signed by a parent or guardian the child must take some identification as proof of age to one of the pools to receive their free swimming card.  A passport or birth certificate is suitable.

10 Ways to Save during School Summer Holidays

10 Ways to Save during School Summer Holidays
mySupermarket’s money saving food tips

With the school summer holidays just a hop, skip and jump away, kids across the nation are counting down the days to fun, fun, fun! Meanwhile cash-strapped parents are counting down the days until their weekly food bills rocket.

Parents, before you head to the bank manager to negotiate a loan to cover your family’s summer food bill, check out these ten savvy saving tips from mySupermarket
, the grocery shopping site that helps you make huge savings on your weekly shop.

James Foord, parent of two and money saving expert at shopping site mySupermarket believes the family can eat well without breaking the bank if mum and dad put in a little planning and preparation.

James’ ten tips for a thrifty summer holiday with your little cherubs are:

1.      Preparation – a simple, yet effective tip. Put 20 minutes aside at the beginning of each week to prepare a shopping list and menu for the week ahead - this will help save you time mid-week and stick within budget.

2.      Ready meals – not the ones from the supermarket! Cook things like pasta sauces, stews and pies in bulk and defrost whilst you’re on a big day out with the kids, so all you have to do is reheat when you get in. Plus make savings on specially prepared products like grated cheese, do it yourself it’s cheaper.

3.      Shop Online – you can make huge savings by shopping online - it will also prevent you being coaxed into buying products strategically placed around the store to entice you. Sites like
mySupermarket enable you to shop across all the major stores at once whilst being able to swap and save to the cheapest like- for-like products or baskets. Plus there are vouchers to help you make even more savings. You can save £15 - £20 at least on your average weekly shop.

4.      Avoid taking the kids to the supermarket or shopping on an empty stomach - if you do prefer visiting the supermarket, kids will always find extras to put in the basket, from treats to keep them quiet whilst you’re shopping or a present if they’re well behaved, both of which significantly increases the price of your shop – plus don’t shop whilst hungry, you'll spend more on treats and products you might not normally buy.

5.      Buy in bulk – buy in bulk store cupboard essentials like pasta, rice and squashes that go further for longer.

6.      Own brand – supermarkets’ own brand products taste just as good and will save you money. As an extra tool, mySupermarket enables you to view the best like-for-like products online, or you can use the mySupermarket App
instore to scan for the cheapest deals.

7.      Create healthy snacks – can save you a small fortune throughout the summer and the kids can help. Healthy snacks include homemade fresh fruit lollies, jelly in small pots to take on day trips, chopped up carrot, celery sticks and delicious smoothies.

8.      Expensive snacks – keep costly sweet treats out of reach in high cupboards for special occasions.

9.      Day trips – take a picnic with you to prevent buying unhealthy snacks and drinks. The kids will love opening the tubs and discovering what’s inside too.

10.   Boredom – make sure the kids have plenty to do. Like most of us, once you’re bored food comes to the forefront of your mind.
